# Open Voyager from a link

> Use voyager:// links to open a new Voyager chat with a prompt ready, or to start a technique from voyager.so.

A `voyager://` link opens the Voyager desktop app from a web page, a note or a message. Voyager must be installed on the computer where you click it.

## Start a new chat with a prompt

Clicking the link opens Voyager and shows **A link wants to start a chat with this prompt**, with the prompt as plain text. Choose **Use prompt** to put it in a new chat's message box, or **Dismiss** to drop it. Nothing is sent until you press **Send** yourself.

| Part | What it does |
| - | - |
| `prompt` | The text for the message box, URL-encoded, up to 3,000 characters. Leave it out to open an empty chat. |
| `kind` | Optional: `video`, `image` or `audio`, to suggest what the chat makes. |
| `model` | Optional: a model's id, to suggest that model in the chat. Voyager ignores a model it doesn't know. |

If you aren't signed in or haven't finished setup yet, Voyager keeps the prompt and offers it once you're ready.

## Start a technique from voyager.so

**Open in Voyager** on a technique on voyager.so uses a `voyager://open/technique` link. It opens a new chat with that technique attached. See [Library](https://docs.voyager.so/guides/library.md#techniques) for the **Techniques** page inside the app.

## If the link does nothing

* Check that Voyager is installed. Open it once so your computer knows which app handles `voyager://` links.
* Some apps and websites block links that open other apps. Copy the link into your browser's address bar instead.
* A prompt longer than the limit doesn't open a chat. Shorten it and try again.
