# Install on Linux

> Install the Voyager alpha on 64-bit Linux as an AppImage or a .deb package.

When you're done, the Voyager alpha is installed and open on its welcome screen, ready for setup.

<Note>
  **Before you start**

  * A 64-bit Intel or AMD PC running a desktop Linux distribution. Arm isn't supported.
  * A **Secret Service keyring**, such as GNOME Keyring or KWallet, installed and unlocked. Voyager saves your sign-ins there. Most GNOME and KDE desktops have one already.
  * The Linux version is an **alpha**: recording your screen, letting the agent use other apps and some creative-app features aren't available. MP4 export needs an extra library (see below). See [Requirements](/get-started/requirements).
  * Voyager is free to download.
</Note>

## Choose a package

| | AppImage | `.deb` |
| - | - | - |
| Works on | Most distributions | Debian, Ubuntu and their derivatives |
| Updates | Updates itself from inside Voyager | Install each new version by hand |
| Install | Make it executable and run it | Install with `apt` |

If you're not sure, use the AppImage.

Move it somewhere you'll keep it, such as `~/Applications`. Voyager updates this file in place, so don't leave it in a folder you clear out.

## Check it worked

Voyager opens on its welcome screen with a **Set up** button. Clicking it starts setup, beginning with signing in to your Voyager account in your browser.

The AppImage updates itself: new versions download in the background and install when you restart Voyager. With the `.deb`, download new versions from your [dashboard](https://voyager.so/dashboard/download) and install each one the same way. See [Updates](/help/updates).

## MP4 export on Linux

Linux has no built-in MP4 (H.264) encoder, and Voyager can't include one, so out of the box Voyager delivers finished video as WebM instead of MP4. WebM plays in browsers, most video players and most upload sites. If you ask for an MP4, the agent tells you it isn't available on this computer and offers WebM or image frames instead. MP4 export needs Cisco's OpenH264 library.

## If something went wrong

<AccordionGroup>
  <Accordion title="The AppImage doesn't start">
    AppImages need FUSE. Install your distribution's FUSE package (for example `libfuse2` or `fuse3`) and try again. Or start Voyager without FUSE:

    ```bash theme={"system"}
    ./Voyager-*.AppImage --appimage-extract-and-run
    ```

  <Accordion title="Sign-in fails and mentions your credential store or keyring">
    Voyager couldn't save your sign-in. Make sure a Secret Service keyring such as GNOME Keyring or KWallet is installed, running and unlocked, and that you allow Voyager access when it asks. Then sign in again.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="Voyager says automatic updates need the AppImage">
    You installed the `.deb`, which doesn't update itself. Install new versions by hand from your [dashboard](https://voyager.so/dashboard/download), or switch to the AppImage.

  <Accordion title=""Voyager could not start its local server."">
    Click **Try Again** first. If the message says your disk is full, free up some space, then try again. If it offers **Repair and Start**, click it: Voyager sets the damaged data aside and keeps everything it can read. If none of that works, [get help](/help/get-help).
